Richard Benson
Richard Benson grew up on small farm in Yorkshire, the eldest son of a family that had been farming in the area for 200 years.
Discovering that he was not cut out for farm life, he left to become a journalist in London , but returned years later when his father, mother and brother were forced to sell up.
In his 2005 memoir about this experience, The Farm: The Story of one Family and the English Countryside, he recorded a way of life that is vanishing in front of our eyes, and captured the feelings of a famiiy undergoing profound changes.
It was described by Gervase Phinn as "a superb book...an engaging, tender and ultimately uplifting story of a family and its struggle to eke a living from the land." and by The Times as "A meditation on the nature of love, work and family, happiness and belonging and the mutability of all these things."
The Farm was short listed for the Guardian First Book of the Year Award, chosen for the Richard and Judy book club in 2006, and became a UK number one bestseller. Richard is currently working on a new book charting the lives of a single family over 100 years in industrial Yorkshire.
He writes for The Daily Telegraph, Guardian and Observer and GQ, and lives with his partner and daughter in London.
